The New Zealand Sports Journalists Association Inc., was formed in 1979 by a group of Wellington based sports journalists and broadcasters who identified the need for a body to be the ‘legitimate voice of sporting journalists’ in New Zealand.

Duly formed and incorporated, the Association was also admitted to membership of AIPS, the International Sports Press Association in 1980 and has continued to operate as a sounding board and for the promotion and enhancement of the profession and betterment of facilities for its members ever since.

Since 1980 it has held an annual Awards competition that is currently known as the ‘TP’ Awards, so named in honour of the man known as the doyen of sports journalism in New Zealand, the late Sir Terry ‘TP’ McLean.
